6 Weeks in Our Haven – an Initial Review by Mandy and Kendrick

There comes a point in every camper’s life when you look around your home on wheels and think, “What if… but bigger?” Not fifth-wheel mortgage bigger, but just enough space to stretch your legs, turn around without apologizing to your spouse, and maybe — just maybe — sleep without your feet touching a wall.

Enter the nuCamp Haven 220. (Yes, Haven. Because “Moderately Comfortable Box of Joy 220” didn’t test as well in marketing.)

After spending time with it, we can confidently say this travel trailer feels like nuCamp took everything people loved about the TAB line, gave it a double espresso, and said, “Let’s open things up.” And by that, I mean you can actually exist inside it without performing a three-point turn every time you need a snack.

Let’s start with the good stuff — because there’s a lot of it.

The Walk-Around Bed (A Revolutionary Concept in a Small Camper!)

We need to talk about the walk-around bed. Not in a casual way. In a this-changes-marriages kind of way.

If you’ve ever owned a smaller camper, you know the nightly ritual: one person climbs over the other like they’re attempting an Olympic vault, followed by a whispered “sorry,” followed by a knee to the ribcage. Very romantic.

The Haven 220 says, “What if we didn’t do that anymore?”

Instead, you get a legit walk-around bed. Midnight bathroom trips no longer require parkour. It’s one of those features you don’t realize you needed until you have it.

Separate Shower and Toilet (A Spa Day, Minus the Cucumbers on Your Eyes)

Another standout: the separate shower and toilet.

This is huge. Not metaphorically — although also that — but practically. In many campers, the “wet bath” is a place where your toilet, sink, and shower all coexist. Everything gets wet. Everything.

The Haven 220 says, “No, no. You deserve more.”

Having a separate shower and toilet feels borderline luxurious. You can shower without soaking your toilet paper into papier-mâché.  It’s the kind of upgrade that makes you question how you lived before.

Storage for Days (Seriously, Just Bring it All!)

The storage situation is… ridiculous. In a good way.

Inside, you’ve got cabinets, compartments, and cleverly designed spaces that seem to appear out of nowhere.

And then there’s the outdoor passthrough storage. This is where things get dangerous. Because now you can bring everything. Chairs, Gazelle gazebos, grills, tools, extra gear, that thing you swore you’d use last year but didn’t.

The Haven 220 doesn’t judge. It just says, “Sure, throw it in.”

Lighting That Doesn’t Feel Like a Cave or a Hospital

Lighting in RVs is often one of two extremes: “abandoned cave” or “interrogation room.”

The Haven 220 threads the needle beautifully. Natural light pours in through well-placed windows, making the interior feel open and inviting. You won’t feel like you’re living inside a breadbox.

Then, when the sun goes down, the artificial lighting picks up the slack without blinding you or making everything look like a dentist’s office. It’s generally just well thought out.

Rear-View Camera (Saving Marriages Since Installation)

Backing up a trailer is a team sport, sort of. One person waves their arms like they’re directing a plane; the other pretends to understand what those signals mean, and eventually someone says, “STOP STOP STOP.”

The integrated rear-view camera changes that dynamic dramatically.

Now, you can actually see what you’re doing. Backing into a site becomes less of a guessing game and more of a controlled maneuver. It won’t eliminate all arguments, but it will significantly reduce the number of “I said LEFT!” moments.

Electric Jack

The electric jack on the Haven 220 is a gift. Push a button and boom — done. Hooking up and unhooking is no longer an arm workout. It’s one of those small conveniences that quickly becomes non-negotiable.

The Awning (Fast, Convenient, and Slightly Dramatic in Wind)

The built-in electric awning is perfect for those moments when you just want shade now.

It’s not designed to use on very windy days, but on a calm or mildly breezy day, it’s fantastic. Push a button, instant shade. No wrestling poles, no complicated setup, no YouTube tutorial required. It’s camping efficiency at its finest.

Kitchen Counter Extender (Because Cooking Requires Space… Apparently)

Cooking in a camper often feels like preparing a gourmet meal on a nightstand.

The Haven 220 addresses this with a quick flip-up/down kitchen counter extender. It’s simple, effective, and surprisingly impactful. Suddenly, you have room to chop, prep, and pretend you’re on a cooking show instead of balancing a cutting board on top of a sink.

Flip it up when you need it, down when you don’t.

The “Cons” (Also Known as “Things We’re Pretending to Complain About”)

Dry Camping Limitations (For Now)

No RV is perfect. But the Haven 220’s downsides feel more like “areas of future greatness.”

While the Haven has strong amenities, it doesn’t have all the off-grid capabilities of the boondock Black Canyon teardrops. Specifically, not everything runs off 12-volt or inverter systems yet  —like the cabin vent fan or TV.

But nuCamp has already hinted at a Boondock version, which is basically their way of saying, “We hear you, off-grid adventurers.”

So yes, it’s a limitation—but also a temporary one.

You’ll Notice It While Towing

If you’re moving up from something like a TAB 320 or TAB 400, you’re going to notice the Haven 220 behind you.

It’s bigger. It has more presence. It exists.

But here’s the thing: that extra size directly translates into comfort, usability, and livability. It’s a trade-off that feels more than fair. You’ll adjust quickly, and then wonder how you ever camped without the extra space.

Just make sure your tow vehicle can handle the extra weight of the Haven 220 before trying to tow it.

High Storage (Short People, We See You)

Some of the storage sits a bit high. If you’re vertically gifted, congratulations — you’ll never notice.

If you’re more in Mandy’s camp (short), you might find yourself doing a little reach-and-hope routine.

The solution? A small footstool. Problem solved. Bonus: you now have a multipurpose item that doubles as a seat, step, or impromptu table.

Final Thoughts: Why We Love the Haven 220

The nuCamp Haven 220 hits a sweet spot that’s surprisingly hard to find. It’s spacious without being cumbersome, comfortable without being overcomplicated, and thoughtfully designed in ways that actually matter when you’re out using it.

The walk-around bed alone is worth writing poetry about. The separate shower and toilet feel luxurious in the best way. Storage is abundant to the point of enabling your overpacking habits. And the little conveniences — like the electric jack, rear-view camera, and counter extender — add up to a better camping experience.

It’s comfortable. It’s practical. It’s just the right amount of fancy without losing its sense of adventure.

And most importantly, it lets you camp without climbing over your partner at 2 a.m.—which, honestly, might be the greatest innovation of all time.

  1. Loved the review, lots of tempting options for the future. For now we are still in love with our 2021 320S, proving nuCamp makes fantastic products you will love for a long time.
Congratulations on the new Haven 220.
p.s. any optional modification to the stove/fridge area of the T@B 360 might bring on a few more customers 🙂

    1. We’re so glad you are loving your TAB 320! Mandy and Kendrick are only temporarily in the Haven. They’ll be back in their TAB 400 soon ?

  2. Excellent write up!! I think I’ll wait for the boondock version unless nüCamp allows us to make some big mods on the build like having a 3 way fridge 12v fans & TV and a crank tongue.

  3. As a former T@da owner, the Haven looks like a very good answer to requests many of us made to nuCamp for a T@da-like replacement. About towing, though: what do you recommend? I saw the Haven “on tour” last year being towed by an Escalade but I can’t afford a Haven AND a Cadillac. So when you say “a vehicle that can handle the added weight,” can you give some examples? Thanks for your review!

    1. We have not tested Haven with a variety of vehicles, so we cannot provide vehicle recommendations. The Haven has a total gross dry weight of 3,969 lbs. We recommend talking with your vehicle manufacturer for information on towing capacity.

  4. I often wonder why Nucamp did not go with four wheels. With the weight of the trailer and assorted gear, and water, are the two supplied tires at max in terms of load carrying?
A great first look at the Haven.

  5. OK so honestly now, Mandy and Kendrick – when you have to roll back to NuCamp and unhitch the Haven you’ve been test driving for the last time, are you going to be happy going back to your 400? Or will you put in an order for a new Haven?

  6. After having had a 2017 T@G XL, a 2017 T@B 320-Q, a 2020 T@B 400, and now a 2025 400, the Haven is our “dream camper”! Hopefully one day we can upsize one more time with NuCamp. Just hope our Ford Ranger can tow the extra weight. 🙂

  7. We have five trips and about 2000 miles on our Haven and agree with Mandy’s comments. Our TV and A/C run when the inverter is on and we got the upgraded solar/battery package. There are two things that are CONS for us…one being the relative low rear end. On almost every trip, we scrap the rear and second the step. The step just seems cheap in comparison to the rugged step on the 400.
We have heard nucamp is exploring options for a possible “lift” to give the Haven a bit more clearance. We’ll be at the factory in May for some minor work and are hoping their “lift” is available. We also plan to ask about the step. Our tow vehicle is a F150 5.0 and with that vehicle, we have no issues pulling the Haven.

  8. We need a Boondocking Haven with outdoor kitchen, frig like the 360, dinnette and separate bed. 4000 gvwr. How bout it?

    1. Thank you for your comment! We are working on a Haven boondock model. It will not include an outdoor kitchen. More details to come!
